Signal Awarded Clean-Up Contract from BP Exploration & Production Inc.

MOBILE, AL–16 NOV 2010–Signal International has announced it has been awarded a contract by BP EXPLORATION & PRODUCTION, INC. to decontaminate numerous tank barge vessels utilized in the Offshore drill rig “ Horizon” oil spill incident. State-of-the art robotic cleaning technology is being utilized to protect workers and the environment. The initial contract will continue through the end of the year with a possibility of an extension. More than 100 Signal workers and subcontractor personnel are involved in the effort at Signal’s West Yard located on Jerry St Pe Highway in Pascagoula.

Signal will be employing new robotic technology to perform most of the barge and vessel cleaning. To minimize risk of injury to workers and to avoid any environmental impact robots will clean and flush the vessel tank internals with controlled temperature diesel fuel. As the vessel tanks are cleaned, the used fuels will then be transferred to a transport barge that will take the waste to a local refinery where it will be cleaned and recycled. To support this effort Signal has contracted with companies that have significant experience employing this cleaning technique.

While new to the marine industry the cleaning technology has been used in refineries throughout the US & Canada safely and without incident. All operating procedures were reviewed and approved by the US Coast Guard. Regarding the approval process Dick Marler, Signal’s Chairman, President and CEO remarked that the attention to detail by all parties was very comprehensive. He added that, “This task is a very strong endorsement of Signal’s safety record……and we are confident that we can assist BP in a controlled, safe, and environmentally compliant manner. This effort will further expand Signal’s capabilities and serve as yet another industry leading step that can be used in our business to perform work even safer and more efficiently in supporting this important effort.”
